Supernova axion emissivity with Δ(1232) resonance in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory

In this paper, we evaluate the energy loss rate of supernovae induced by the axion emission process $\pi^- + p \to n + a$ with the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance in the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory for the first time. Given the axion-nucleon-$\Delta$ interactions, we include the previously ignored $\Delta$-mediated graphs to the $\pi^- + p \to n + a$ process. In particular, the $\Delta^0$-mediated diagram can give a resonance contribution to the supernova axion emission rate when the center-of-mass energy of the pion and proton approaches the $\Delta(1232)$ mass. With these new contributions, we find that for the typical supernova temperatures, compared with the earlier work with the axion-nucleon (and axion-pion-nucleon contact) interactions, the supernova axion emissivity can be enhanced by a factor of $\sim$4(2) in the Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov model and up to a factor of $\sim$5(2) in the Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky model with small $\tan\beta$ values. Remarkably, we notice that the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance gives a destructive contribution to the supernova axion emission rate at high supernova temperatures, which is a nontrivial result in this study.

Chiral corrections to the masses of the doubly heavy baryons

We study the masses of the doubly bottom baryons and the charmed-bottom baryons up to in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We determine the unknown low energy constants in the quark model and lattice QCD. We show the numerical results for the masses of the doubly bottom baryons and the charmed-bottom baryons up to .

Radiative correction to lepton proton scatterings in manifestly Lorentz-invariant chiral perturbation theory

Manifestly lorentz-invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory is used to calculate the radiative correction of low energy elastic lepton proton scatterings. Corrections of differential cross section and charge asymmetry are given at next-to-leading order with nonzero lepton mass, in which both are infrared and ultraviolet finite. The results are basically consistent with previous predictions based on hadron model, but somewhat different from calculations based on heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, especially in charge asymmetry.

Electric dipole moments of baryons with bottom quarks

Triggered by experimental prospects to measure electromagnetic dipole moments of baryons containing a bottom quark, we calculate the CP-odd electric dipole moments (EDMs) of spin-1/2 single-bottom baryons. We consider CP-violating dimension-six operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory that involve bottom quarks, and apply heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory to compute the EDMs of several baryons. We discuss the expected size of the EDMs for beyond-the-Standard Model physics appearing at the TeV scale.

Nonperturbative two-pion exchange contributions to the nucleon-nucleon interaction in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory

We calculate the nonperturbative two-pion exchange (TPE) contributions to the $NN$ interaction in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. We study how the nonperturbative resummation affects the $NN$ phase shifts for partial waves with $J \geq 3$ and $L \leq 6$. No significant differences are observed between the nonperturbative phase shifts and perturbative ones for most partial waves except for $^3D_3$, for which the nonperturbative resummation greatly improves the description of the phase shifts. However, a significant cutoff dependence is found for this partial wave and a reasonable description of the phase shifts can only be obtained with a particular cutoff. Furthermore, we compare the so-obtained nonperturbative phase shifts with those obtained in the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We show that the contributions from relativistic nonperturbative TPE are more moderate than those from the nonrelativistic TPE obtained in the dimensional regularization scheme. A proper convergence pattern is observed for most of the partial waves studied except for $^3F_3$, $^3F_4$, and $^3H_6$, for which the subleading TPE contributions are a bit strong. We find that for $H$ and $I$ partial waves, the OPE alone can already describe the phase shifts reasonably well.

Peripheral nucleon-nucleon scattering at next-to-next-to-leading order in SU(3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory

We calculate the complete $T$ matrices of the elastic nucleon-nucleon scattering up to third order in SU(3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The phase shifts with orbital angular momentum $L\geq 2$ and the mixing angles with $J\geq 2$ are evaluated by using low-energy constants that were extracted from the meson-baryon analysis. It turns out that our prediction is consistent with the empirical phase shifts and mixing angles data, and also the results from SU(2) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The errors from the low-energy constants are analyzed in detail. Our calculation provides reliable evidence that the nucleon-nucleon interaction calculated in SU(3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory leads to reasonable predictions.

Baryon magnetic moment in large- Nc chiral perturbation theory: Complete analysis for Nc=3

Baryon magnetic moments are computed in baryon chiral perturbation theory in the large-$N_c$ limit at one-loop order, where $N_c$ is the number of color charges. Orders $\mathcal{O}(m_q^{1/2})$ and $\mathcal{O}(m_q \ln m_q)$ corrections are both evaluated including all the operator structures that participate at the physical value $N_c=3$. The complete expressions for octet and decuplet baryon magnetic moments in addition to decuplet-octet baryon transition moments are thus compared to their available counterparts obtained in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory for degenerate intermediate baryons in the loops. Theoretical expressions fully agree at the physical values $N_c=3$ and $N_f=3$ flavors of light quarks. Some numerical evaluations are produced via a least-squares fit to explore the free parameters in the analysis. Results point out the necessity of incorporating the effects of non-degenerate intermediate baryons in the loops for a consistent determination of these free parameters.

The axion-baryon coupling in SU(3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory

In the past, the axion-nucleon coupling has been calculated in the framework of SU(2) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory up to third order in the chiral power counting. Here, we extend these earlier studies to the case of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory with SU(3) flavor symmetry and derive the axion coupling to the full SU(3) baryon octet, showing that the axion also significantly couples to hyperons. As studies on dense nuclear matter suggest the possible existence of hyperons in stellar objects such as neutron stars, our results should have phenomenological implications related to the so-called axion window.

Magnetic moments of the spin- 32 doubly charmed baryons in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory

Inspired by the discovery of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ doubly charmed baryon ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Xi}}}_{cc}^{++}$ and the subsequent theoretical studies of its magnetic moments, we study the magnetic moments of its spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ heavy quark spin symmetry counterparts, up to the next-to-leading order in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. With the tree-level contributions fixed by the quark model while the two low energy constants $C$ and $H$ controlling the loop contributions determined in two ways: the quark model (case 1) and lattice QCD simulations together with the quark model (case 2), we study the quark mass dependence of the magnetic moments and compare them with the predictions of the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. It is shown that the difference is sizable in case 1, but not in case 2 due to the smaller low energy constants $C$ and $H$, similar to the case of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ doubly charmed baryons. Second, we predict the magnetic moments of the spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ doubly charmed baryons and compare them with those of other approaches. The predicted magnetic moments in case 2 for the spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ doubly charmed baryons are closer to those of other approaches. In addition, the large differences in case 1 and case 2 for the predicted magnetic moments may indicate the inconsistency between the quark model and the lattice QCD simulations, which should be checked by future experimental or more lattice QCD data.

Baryon axial vector current in large- Nc chiral perturbation theory: Complete analysis for Nc=3

The baryon axial vector current is computed in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory in the large-$N_c$ limit, where $N_c$ is the number of color charges. One-loop nonanalytic corrections of order $m_q \ln m_q$ are comprised in the analysis, with contributions of both intermediate octet and decuplet baryon states, to all orders in the $1/N_c$ expansion of the axial vector current relevant for $N_c=3$. Theoretical expressions are obtained in the limit of vanishing decuplet-octet mass difference only, which allows one to carry out a full comparison with conventional heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory results for three flavors of light quarks and at the physical value $N_c=3$. Both approaches perfectly agree to all orders considered. Furthermore, a numerical analysis via a least-squares fit is performed in order to extract the values of the free parameters of the theory, using the experimental data available. The predictions of formalism are remarkable.

Spin- 32 doubly charmed baryon contribution to the magnetic moments of the spin- 12 doubly charmed baryons

We have systematically investigated the magnetic moments of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ doubly charmed baryons in the framework of the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. In this paper, one loop corrections with intermediate spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ and spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ doubly charmed baryon states are considered. The numerical results are calculated to next-to-leading order: $\mu_{\Xi^{++}_{cc}}=0.35\mu_{N}$, $\mu_{\Xi^{+}_{cc}}=0.62\mu_{N}$, $\mu_{\Omega^{+}_{cc}}=0.41\mu_{N}$. Our results may be useful for future experiment and chiral extrapolation of the lattice QCD.

Pion-nucleon scattering to order p4 in SU(3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory

We calculate the $T$-matrices of elastic pion-nucleon ($\pi N$) scattering up to fourth order in SU(3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The pertinent low-energy constants are determined by fitting to $\pi N$ phase shifts below 200 MeV pion laboratory momentum in the physical region. The scattering lengths and scattering volumes are extracted from the chiral amplitudes, and turn out to be in good agreement with those of other approaches and the available experimental values. We also discuss the subthreshold parameters and the related issues. On the basis of the various phase shifts, the threshold parameters and the subthreshold parameters, the convergence of the chiral expansion is analyzed in detail. The calculation provides the possibility to consider explicitly more complex processes involving strangeness.

ΣcN interaction in chiral effective field theory

We adopt the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory to calculate the $\Sigma_cN$ interaction to the next-to-leading order. We consider the contact interactions, one-pion-exchange contributions, two-pion-exchange diagrams, and renormalization effects of the vertices, masses and wave functions. With the pion mass dependent expression, we fit the $\Sigma_cN$ interaction from HAL QCD calculation with $m_{\pi}\approx 410$ MeV and $m_{\pi}\approx 570$ MeV, and then extrapolate it to the physical pion mass. The $^3S_1(I=1/2)$ $\Sigma_{c}N$ interaction is weakly attractive but no bound solution is found. We also propose a quark model to estimate the leading order $\Sigma_cN$ contact interaction with the $NN$ interaction as input. This approach combining the quark model and the chiral effective field theory predicts a very attractive interaction in $^1S_0(I=3/2)$ $\Sigma_{c}N$ channel and a two-body bound state.

Precision calculation of the axion-nucleon coupling in chiral perturbation theory

We derive the axion-nucleon interaction Lagrangian in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order. The effective axion-nucleon coupling is calculated to a few percent accuracy.

Lepton-proton two-photon exchange in chiral perturbation theory

We use heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory to evaluate the two-photon exchange corrections to the low-energy elastic lepton-proton scattering at next-to-leading order accuracy, i.e., ${\mathcal O}(\alpha, M^{-1})$, including a non-zero lepton mass. We consider the elastic proton intermediate state in the two-photon exchange together in the soft photon approximation. The infrared singular contributions are projected out using dimensional regularization. The resulting infrared singularity-free two-photon exchange contribution is in good numerical agreement with existing predictions based on standard diagrammatic soft photon approximation evaluations.

Triangle diagram in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory

The pion-baryon triangle diagram is inspected for a special kinematic region where the squared momentum transfer t is close to . Instead of arguing on the ground of anomalous threshold, we investigate possible impacts on power counting. The pion can have very small energies, as opposed to in the physical region, which allows all three propagators to be extremely near their mass shell and contributes significantly to the loop integral. We find that in this narrow kinematic window the static-limit approximation for the baryon propagator is invalid and the resummation of the kinetic energy is necessary. Interestingly, in contrast to low-energy two-baryon processes, this resummation of baryon recoils does not lead to overall enhancement of power counting of the diagram.

Magnetic moments of the spin−1/2 singly charmed baryons in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory

Recent experimental advances have reignited theoretical interests in heavy-flavor hadrons. In this work, we study the magnetic moments of the spin-1/2 singly charmed baryons up to the next-to-leading order in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. The pertinent low energy constants $g_{1-4}$ are fixed with the help of the quark model and the heavy quark spin flavor symmetry, while the remaining $d_2$, $d_3$, $d_5$ and $d_6$ are determined by fitting to the lattice QCD pion-mass dependent data. We study the magnetic moments as a function of $m_\pi^2$ and compare our results with those obtained in the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We find that the loop corrections induced by the anti-triplet states are dominated by the baryon pole diagram. In addition, we predict the magnetic moments of the spin-1/2 singly charmed baryons and compare them with those of other approaches.

Light pseudoscalar meson and doubly charmed baryon scattering lengths with heavy diquark-antiquark symmetry

We adopt the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT) to calculate the scattering lengths of $\phi B_{cc}^{(*)}$ up to $\mathcal{O}(p^3)$, where $\phi$ is the pseudoscalar mesons. The recoil effect and the mass splitting between the spin-$1\over 2$ and spin-$3\over 2$ doubly charmed baryons are included. In order to give the numerical results, we construct the chiral Lagrangians with heavy diquark-antiquark (HDA) symmetry in a formally covariant approach. Then, we relate the low energy constants (LECs) of the doubly charmed baryons to those of $D^{(*)}$ mesons. The LECs for the $\phi D^{(*)}$ scattering are estimated in two scenarios, fitting lattice QCD results and using the resonance saturation model. The chiral convergence of the first scenario is not good enough due to the the large strange quark mass and the presence of the possible bound states, virtual states and resonance. The final results for two scenarios are consistent with each other. The interaction for the $[\pi\Xi^{(*)}_{cc}]^{(1/2)}$, $[K\Xi^{(*)}_{cc}]^{(0)}$, $[K\Omega^{(*)}_{cc}]^{(1/2)}$, $[\eta\Xi^{(*)}_{cc}]^{(1/2)}$, $[\eta\Omega^{(*)}_{cc}]^{(0)}$ and $[\bar{K}\Xi^{(*)}_{cc}]^{(0)}$ channels are attractive. The most attractive channel $[\bar{K}\Xi^{(*)}_{cc}]^{(0)}$ may help to form the partner states of the $D_{s0}^*(2317)$ ($D_{s1}(2460)$) in the doubly heavy sector.

S -wave baryon nonleptonic decay amplitude in large−Nc chiral perturbation theory

The s-wave decay amplitude in the nonleptonic decay of baryons is analyzed within heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory in the large-N_c limit at one-loop order, where N_c is the number of color charges. Loop graphs with octet and decuplet intermediate states are systematically incorporated into the analysis and the effects of the decuplet-octet mass difference are accounted for. There are large-N_c cancellations between different one-loop graphs as a consequence of the large-N_c spin-flavor symmetry of QCD baryons. The predictions of large-N_c baryon chiral perturbation theory are in very good agreement both with the expectations from the 1/N_c expansion and with the experimental data.

Radiative decays of the singly heavy baryons in chiral perturbation theory

In the framework of the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT), we calculate the radiative decay amplitudes of the singly heavy baryons up to the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). In the numerical analysis, we adopt the heavy quark symmetry to relate some low energy constants (LECs) with those LECs in the calculation of the magnetic moments. We use the results from the lattice QCD simulation as input. With a set of unified LECs, we obtain the numerical (transition) magnetic moments and radiative decay widths. We give the numerical results for the spin-$1\over 2$ sextet to the spin-$1\over 2$ antitriplet up to the next-to-leading order (NLO). The nonvanishing $\Gamma(\Xi_c^{'0} \rightarrow \Xi^0_c\gamma)$ and $\Gamma(\Xi_c^{*0} \rightarrow \Xi^0_c \gamma)$ solely arise from the U-spin symmetry breaking, and do not depend on the lattice QCD inputs up to NLO. We also systematically give the numerical analysis of the magnetic moments of the spin-$1\over 2$, spin-$3\over 2$ sextet and their radiative decay widths up to NNLO. In the heavy quark limit, the radiative decays between the sextet states happen through the magnetic dipole (M1) transitions, while the electric quadrupole (E2) transition does not contribute. We also extend the same analysis to the single bottom baryons.
